New IITs

In 2009, eight new IITs were created. These are yet to move to their planned campuses. (Keshav Agarwal, Students question HRD minister over 8 new IITs Times of India, Jun 7, 2014). In 2014, five new IITs were proposed ([http://www.dnaindia.com/india/report-5-new-iits-likely-to-start-functioning-from-next-session-2014474).

Among IIT students and alumnus, this move is being criticized widely. There are many voices which suggest that it may be better to devote these resources to strengthening the existing institutions, all of which are facing a severe faculty crunch. New IITs

In 2014, five new IITs were announced by the government. One more IIT to be set up in Karnataka was announced. Indian School of Mines (ISM), Dhanbad is now converted into an IIT . IIT Tirupati and IIT Palakkad started in 2015. Other IITs expected to start admissions in 2016 are:

   IIT Chattisgarh, Raipur 
   IIT Goa 
   IIT Jammu, Jammu and Kashmir
   IIT Karnataka 
   Conversion of ISM Dhanbad into IIT Dhanbad.
