Academic Area

Academic Area comprises academic buildings and facilities such as the PK Kelkar Library, Computer Centre, National Wind Tunnel Facility and SIDBI Innovation and Incubation Centre. It also houses faculty offices, laboratories and administrative buildings. The academic area is connected by a corridor which links all the major buildings.



Lecture Hall Complex

It consists of 17 lecture halls. Some of them are big enough to encapsulate 300-400 students. Most of the lectures for all departments are held in them. They are also used for talks, seminars, and activites related to Student Gymkhana.

Faculty Building

This is one of the tallest buildings in IIT Kanpur and is the place for offices of faculties of most of the departments. DOSA (Dean of Student Affair Office), Scholarship Cell are also present here.

P K Kelkar Library (Formerly Central Library) of IIT Kanpur is an academic library with a collection of more than 3,00,000 volumes and subscriptions to more than 1000 periodicals. It is one of the best libraries in the nation housed in three-storey building with total floor area of 6973 sq. m. The Abstracting and Indexing periodicals, Microform and CD-ROM databases, technical reports, standards and thesis are important part of this collection. Each year, on an average 4500 books and journal volumes are added to the collection. The Library remains open, for 358 days of the year, from 8 a.m. to 12 midnight on all working days; 9 a.m. to 12 midnight on Saturdays; 9 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. on Sundays and Gazetted holidays and for 24 hours during the two examinations each semester.

Computer Centre

Computer Center (CC) caters to the computational and IT related needs of the academic as well as residential community at IIT Kanpur. Student ID Cell is also present inside it. It consists around 200 computers based on either Windows or Linux. The Computer Centre has three state of the art Data Centres with precision air conditioning for housing all the CC facilities as well as large clusters of the project PIs, office automation servers, telephone exchange and other institute servers. All the CC facilities are backed up by a UPS system and diesel generator for 24 hours uninterrupted supply.

Computer Science Department Building

Computer Science department is one of the most famous departments of IIT Kanpur. It now has two beautiful buildings, Rajeev Motwani building and H R Kadim Building. Faculties of Computer Science department had their offices in H R Kadim building but they are now shifted to new Motwani Building.

H R Kadim Building

The building is situated next to the Computer Center. It is a three-storey building with total constructed area of 31,000 square feet. The building has been designed to support a maximum faculty size of 28. It has three classrooms where one can hold classes of sizes 100, 50, and 40 approximately. There is students' lounge with lockers and some furniture. There are three meeting-cum-discussion rooms. PhD students will have their own rooms. There are also rooms for research staff. The lab can accomodate 160 users at a time.

Rajeev Motwani Building

The Rajeev Motwani Building is a newly constructed building of Department of Computer Science and Engineering in the memory of Rajeev Motwani, one of the distinct alumnus of IIT Kanpur. It has two very large lecture halls. Just as H R Kadim building it is fully air conditioned. It is also among one of the tallest bulding in IIT Kanpur. The Motwani building is a six-story building with a floor area of 3,650 square meters and has a 200 seat classroom (RM 101), 22 faculty offices and 17 labs. The construction work started in early May 2011 and is now available at the service of the Institute.

BSBE department building

This is one of the most beautiful buildings in IIT Kanpur. Located just near the entry gate of Academic Area it is a three storey building. It has labs related to the department and offices of faculties of BSBE department.

Students' Lounge

For the purpose of convenience for students to study & spend time in between lectures in Academic area, a new lounge was opened for students on August 07, 2017. It was made from contributions from 1989 batch. It is located at the ground floor of LHC (below L-7 and LHC office with entry from the portion below L-1 and L-2). The lounge has a hall with sitting place for about 40-50 students. The lounge also has two discussion rooms for discussion with instructors after the lectures. The Lounge is available to the students from 0800 hrs to 2100 hrs from Monday to Saturday. The lounge is not available for booking.

DOAA Office

The Academic Office exists to help facilitate, initiate and co-ordinate the academic work of the Institute, particularly the teaching and assessment of students. It acts as the repository of grades and academic records of all students, both past and present. It also has JEE-office, OARS office.

Food and Snacks

The academic area is home to various eating joints which serve is the ideal hangout spot for students and faculty alike.Spread over the entire academic area, most of these joints are easy on you pocket and serve food everyone can relish.

Café Coffee Day outlet is situated in the Academic Area, next to the P K Kelkar Library. Despite having been established merely two years back, CCD has become the most sought after spot for students and professors to unwind as they sip on their coffees. The outlet serves a sufficient variety of hot and cold beverages which not only include the traditional Cappuccino, Espresso and Latte, but also some really unique and refreshing drinks like Creamy Toffee Frappe. They also serve light snacks like sandwiches and burgers in both vegetarian and non vegetarian varieties. The outlet has undergone a recent renovation which has improved the aesthetics of the place and has been appreciated by all within the IITK community.

Pandit's Canteens

Apart from CCD, one can find at two different spots within the academic area, the Pandit's Vegetarian Canteen. Successfully manages by the Pandit's catering chain, these canteens serve a wide variety of traditional Indian snacks and also main course. The DOAA Canteen is famous for their signature dish "Cholle Bhature", a surprisingly simple yet lip smacking rendition of this traditional North Indian delicacy. The canteen also serves South Indian, beverages, Mughlai and desserts. The other canteen is located beside the Rajeev Motwani Building and serves evening snacks like Poha, Samosa, Patties, apart from tea and coffee. This canteen is famous for its 'Special Samosa', a delightful modification to the good old Samosa by adding dry fruits in it.
