Tinkering Lab

The Tinkering Lab of IIT Kanpur is a completely student-managed lab where students can come and build things. It was started in conjuncture with the 4i-Lab, Central Workshop, SIIC and the TA Lab.The main aim of Tinkering Lab is to provide the students of IIT Kanpur with a open manufacturing platform, where they can work on their projects.

Contents

History

The Tinkering Lab was initiated by the Batch of 86 during their Silver Jubilee Reunion in December 2010. The batch created a corpus of Rs 70 lakhs for the lab, and the institute gave a matching grant. In January 2013, the Batch of 76 decided to join hands and has committed an additional Rs 50 lakhs towards the corpus.

In addition to the above machines, grinders, buffing tools, bench vices and various fitting and measurement tools are available.

Working

The entry to this lab is restricted to IITK students who have completed the TA201 course. The lab is located in the Central Workshop in the Academic Area of the IIT Kanpur campus. The Lab is open from 2:00 PM to 10:00 PM from Tuesday to Friday. On Saturday, its open from 9:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Sundays and Mondays are weekly off.

The slots can be booked online at – https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1SnByXnzjaJPDM6ouK34eEKH_HcXwdUBy8vPHis84nD0/viewform. Booking reserves you a slot at your desired machine, a locker in the lab and all the safety equipments.
