A passport is a travel document, usually issued by a country's document, that certifies the identity and nationality of its holder primarily for international travel. In India, the passport application process is completely online and a passport can be applied for through the Passport Seva Online Portal. This system has made it extremely easy for Indians to apply for Passports and obtain these documents.
It is especially easy for campus students (and residents) to obtain a Passport. A Bonafide Certificate and one's 10th Marksheet are essentially all that one needs to have for the process. First, one needs to fill out a form in the Online Portal and take an appointment at the nearest Passport Seva Kendra. This in our case would be PSK Kanpur, a mere 10 kms away from the campus gate. Also, PSK Kanpur is usually empty and appontments are generally available for the very next day (this is a huge plus).
The appointment, where the Bonafide (which can be obtained from the DOSA office) and your 10th marksheet are almost all that is checked, takes roughly 2 hours on any given day.
Following this, there is police verification session and the passport arrives in 2 weeks' time. A detailed explanation of the process can be found here.
It is highly recommended that all campus residents have their Passports made while in campus. The process is enormously simplified and goes through with relative ease.
