Janmashtami is an annual Hindu festival that celebrates the birth of Krishna, the eighth avatar of Vishnu.

Month of Celebration

It is observed according to Hindu luni-solar calendar, on the eighth day (Ashtami) of the Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight) in the month of Shraavana of the Hindu Calendar, which overlaps with August and September of the Gregorian calendar.

Campus Celebrations

It is celebrated with great enthusiasm in IITK campus every year. It is organised by the Bhaktivedanta Club under the guidance of Prof. Lakshmidhar Behra. It is basically a cultural event that includes bhajans, dance performances, drama, recitation etc. It was earlier held in Hall-4 but from the previous 2 years it has been held at OAT. The venue is extravagantly decorated by the IITK students. The Club also organizes various competitions in the schools within the campus for the elementary students. The prizes are distributed in the main event on the night of Janmashtami which is also a holiday for all the students.
