The proposition for an Inter IIT Sports Meet was brought up in 1961, and IIT Bombay hosted the first ever Inter IIT Sports Meet. Only five IITs were in existence then, namely IIT Bombay, IIT Madras, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Kanpur and IIT Delhi; who competed in five sports only. The Meet in 1971 was cancelled due to the India-Pakistan war, while the one in 1992 was to be held at IIT Bombay but was cancelled owing to the communal riots in Mumbai. IIT Bombay hosted the 50th Inter IIT Sports Meet in 2014.

Each sport or event carries ten points for the winners, six for the first runners up, four for the second runners up and two for the fourth place. Some points are also given for the March Past which flags off the Meet on the first day. It is led by the defending champions followed by the other IITs. In the end, the total points earned by an IIT during the tournament is calculated and it is known as their General Championship(GC) tally. The IIT with maximum GC tally wins the Inter-IIT Sports meet, and gets to lift the GC trophy. The General Championship trophy is given one to the overall winner among girls and one to the champion among the boys.
