Mess, IIT Kanpur

In IIT Kanpur there are 12 hostels, each having its own individual mess. Each mess has capacity of almost 150-200 seats. The executive issues of the mess are been handled by the Mess Committee. The mess committee headed by the Chairman, i.e the Warden-in-charge of the hall consists of mess accounts secretary, mess store and supply secretary and both the general body representatives. The committee monitors the mess which caters to the boarding requirements of the inmates. The residents are provided breakfast, lunch and dinner each day.

Mess menu

The menu for all the meals is decided by the mess-menu committee (consisting of resident representatives from different areas of the country) in consultation with the mess-management staff and based on the suggestions of residents, also taking into account the seasonal requirements/availability. Mess menus are different in all the halls. Special meals are also served on Friday nights as well as on selected occasions like national festivals, new year day, Holi, Diwali and Id.

During the official holidays, some of the hall mess are closed depending upon the number of students staying back in the hostel during the vacations, in order to save costs. Students leaving the campus during the holidays, whose hall messes is still open in the holidays, have to fill the rebate form before leaving the hostels so that they are not charged for their absence.
Rebate rules can be found here.

Extra items in mess

Vegetarian and Non-vegetarian items are available for a reasonable cost apart from the basic mess menu in all the halls. The cost gets added to the final monthly bill.
