Introduction

Humanities and Social Sciences is one of the academic departments of IIT Kanpur. The Humanities are academic disciplines that study human culture and Social science is a major category of academic disciplines, concerned with society and the relationships among individuals within a society. HSS are multi-disciplinary, and consists of six disciplines: Economics, English Literature and Linguistics, Fine Arts, Philosophy, Psychology, and Sociology (as per IIT Kanpur curriculum). Huminities include English Literature and Linguistics, Fine Arts, Philosophy, Psychology and Social Sciences include Economics and Sociology.

History

Since its inception in 1963, HSS Department offers undergraduate courses to engineering and science students. Between 1964 and 1973 the Department instituted its PhD programmes in all its disciplines except Fine Arts. Since then, nearly 170 PhD degrees have been awarded. Currently, there are 13 faculty members in Economics, 8 in English (and Linguistics), 4 in Fine Arts, 4 in Philosophy, 4 in Psychology and 5 in Sociology, totaling 38 faculty members in HSS. This number is expected to increase in the months to come.[1]

Programs

There are various programs offer by department of Humanities and Social Sciences, Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur.[2]

PhD

Department actively involved in current research across the all area of Humanities and Social Sciences. The focus of the PhD program is on research with high specification in respected field of interest. There are currently over 60 PhD students pursuing their doctoral studies in various HSS disciplines.

BS

In 2005, HSS Department initiated a Five Year Integrated MSc Programme in Economics, similar to the five year programmes in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. In 2011, this programme was replaced with a Four Year BS Programme in Economics, again similar to the other BS programmes at IIT Kanpur.
