Being an academic institution known for its tough academics, gaming at IIT Kanpur is not as widespread as other institutes. The smattering number of gamers does not affect their passion for the game though.

Multiplayer gaming

For multiplayer gaming, there are the all time favourite games - DOTA (now DOTA 2), CS 1.6 (now CS GO), Age of Empires II (now Age of Empires III),Tom Clancy's Rainbow six siege. These mainly fall under the categories of First Person Shooter (FPS) and Strategy Gaming. Students play these seriously, very seriously. There are thriving communities of gamers on campus who often indulge in exciting activities like LAN parties and clan wars.IITK Gamers

This is a game for the pros. DOTA 2 offers endless hours of addiction. This is also the most active community of gamers on campus. There are around 30 gamers who play DOTA 2 regularly, notable among those is Gurpreet, a dual degree student of the CSE department. There are even some legends from the 2006-2007 graduating batch who continue to play this exciting game. Falling into the MOBA(multiplayer online battle arena) category, this is definitely the game played with the highest intensity. Owing to its steep learning curve at the start (and the frustration subsequently), this game is either not tried out or is not pursued by many people. But eventually, this game becomes a great addiction for those who get a hang of it.

Counter Strike/Call of Duty

Both multiplayer first-person shooters, these are the most favoured games for casual gaming during wing bulla sessions. Among the pro-gamers, DOTA is a strong preference, however, among those who play games casually in their wings CS 1.6 is a hot favourite. In the case of Counter Strike, the question is not who plays it, it is instead who does not. Wing bulla sessions are often converted into CS 1.6 LAN sessions with people doing all they can to knock the most skilled player in the opposite team out with a good old headshot from the maverick, invoking a lot of Wah wah's from the rest of the team and much more provoking phrases from the other team. The handles people use in these games are very amusing and stay with the person even after ending the gaming sessions. Recently, players have converted to CS GO, the latest version of CS from Steam.

Age of Empires

Age of Empires has since long been a favourite among students from IITs. It combines sheer passion, dedication along with strategic skills and raw brainpower, something that is omnipresent in IIT students. In Kanpur, it is no different scenario. Often, students hit night-outs building civilizations, collecting resources, constructing wonders, and destroying armies. That's what makes Age of Empires so awesome. This game used to be a people-favourite in earlier times and is now in decline mostly due to outdated graphics and that feeling of nothing-new after playing for some time. It is fun to play this game once in a while though.

Usually played in single or double player mode, this game is a huge hit among these football fans out here. Career mode is popular too, in which you take a club lying down in the dirt somewhere (not necessarily though) and make it the best club in the world. This game is not as easy to master as it seems and you will always find someone who can thrash you.

Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege

Rainbow Six Siege is the new age counter strike with upgraded and high tech weapons . With more than 20 characters to choose from at your disposal. This game has one of fastest growing community. It combination of strategy and crazy shooting skills. It has both multi-player as well as single player.

Single Player

The single player campaign includes as series of situation which unlock one after the other. These situation are basically for the introduction of the characters and getting familiar with the maps. These situations include all the characters at least once and all the maps. These situation might include rescuing or defending the hostage, defending or defusing a bomb, preventing the the bio-hazard from spreading or preventing the other team from intruding and stopping the bio-hazard. In these situation you are totally alone without a team. In other words these single player situation are just a build up to the real arena where you meet the best across the world. The world of multi-player.

The multi-player games can be across the Internet or just our very own favourite LAN.

There are two version of the multi-player. One is where the team defending has to defend the bombs from being defused by the attacking team and the other is where they have to protect the hostage from being rescued within a speculated time. In each of the above mentioned situations. There can only be a maximum of 5 players from each team. Both the sides get a preparation time* where in the attacking team send drones which has to seek the location of the objective while the defending team has to prevent these drones from doing that. The defending also get to place traps for the incoming team along with some protections such as barricading the rooms and reinforcements. After the preparation time is up the round starts irrespective of whether the attacking were able to find the objective or not. Now to win the round the attacking or defending team should achieve the given objective or kill the other teams player before the round ends. After every round there a switch of roles that is the attacking team becomes the defending team and vice-versa. In case of a a tie there is decider round, its an extra in which the winner takes all.

IITK version of this game Its mostly planned out for week end masti but depending on the moods the game might be played on any random day cause us gamers certainly do have a different perspective of time. Wing meetings always all the time end up to be "siege" session.

Review Its just what our generation was waiting for. A multi-player as good as CS but with better game play and much more.

This being said this might just be game to you its a thing of life and death for us die hard gamers
