IIT Kanpur, unlike the assumptions of the outside world, is not a place full of dull bookworms but it houses a vast diversity of talent. Thus, fests at IIT Kanpur is a sight worth witnessing. IIT Kanpur annually hosts festivals in all possible areas ranging from cultural, sports to technical festivals at both intra-IITK and inter-college level. These festivals have been further described in the subsequent sections.
One of the few events which is not a part of students Gymkhana,Hall Day is a big festival for every hall. It is the tradition of IITK to celebrate Hall day for every hall. Every Hall's Residents feel prestigious and put their heart and soul to make the event a successful. The entire hall premises will be decorated with beautiful light lamps and rangoli, creating a very calm and sobre atmosphere all around and making the hall look more attractive at the night,the actual starting mark of the festival.
All Higher officials of the institute are generally invited for the festival.Also, hall residents are allowed to bring their friends professors as guests for the festival Hall day although an informal event, is all about prestige of the hall.
The previous HEC members are honoured on this day. The Cultural activities are generally performed by the first years,so along with freshers day, the hall day becomes a great platform for the freshers to showcase their talents.The events in the hall day are generally aimed at humourous bashing of the other halls although an official theme may be followed. Usually dinner is served as a part of Hall-day celebrations.The dinner coupons are priced at around Rs.250.
Antaragni is the Annual Cultural Festival of IIT Kanpur. The festival was originally known as 'Culfest' which gave the generic name to college festivals in India. It was later re-christened to Antaragni in 1993. Antaragni literally meaning the 'Fire Within' is a celebration of the creative spirit and youthful energy inherent in the country's college students. It is the oldest and one of the largest student-run college festivals in the country. The four fun-filled days of Antaragni, ad-mist the academic rigour at the campus life, is among the most awaited event for an IIT Kanpur student.Antaragini offers various competitions which includes dance, drama, music, fine art and film & photography events. Also various performances by experts are performed in proffessional nights which includes Prima Nocte, Synchronicity, Reverberation and Blitzkrieg.
Udghosh is the annual sports festival that is generally conducted during late september. Over the years Udghosh has evolved and expanded to become the biggest inter college sports extravaganza in India. Being the most eagerly awaited event of the year, it has become a national platform where the youth of the nation get together and interact and indulge in a fair game. Udghosh witnesses participation from students from over 200 top colleges from all over India. Students from all fields – humanities, engineering, science, commerce, law and medicine participate in the event with great gusto. Over 30,000 footfalls are witnessed during the festival. The event offers over sixteen sports competitions which other than cricket and football, also includes kho-kho, tae-kwan-do, badminton, table-tennis, volleyball, football, swimming etc. Also various entertainment shows are organised druing this four day fest. It also has some informal events like poker, air-hockey, wall-climbing etc. to lure out even the non participants.
Techkriti is the annual inter-collegiate technology and entrepreneurship festival organized by the students of IIT Kanpur. Techkriti was launched in 1995 with the aim of developing interest and encouraging innovation in technology among students. In 2009, Megabucks (the Business and Entrepreneurship festival of IIT Kanpur) was merged with Techkriti, recognizing the increasing interdependence of business and technology. In twenty years of its existence, Techkriti has evolved and grown, fulfilling its purpose and becoming one of the most eagerly-awaited college technical as well as entrepreneurial festivals in Asia. Techkriti culminates into a grand four-day festival, attracting footfalls of over 25,000 from all over India and even abroad.
The festival comprises of a plethora of events as well as talks by eminent personalities in the field of science, technology and entrepreneurship. A wide range of competitions in diverse fields of Robotics, Computer Sciences and Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Pure Sciences, Civil Engineering, Aerospace and Astronomy are hosted every year in Techkriti.
